One of the biggest concepts to learn for new parents is the art of packing a diaper bag. My comment is more about choosing your diaper bag...
I have found that a backpack style diaper bag is wonderful because it leaves your hands free to carry and care for baby.
I also use a backpack style purse and use the larger compartment to carry a couple of diapers (pullups these days)... a small travel container of wipes... and a few other important baby/child needs for short trips to the store etc... no need to carry the whole house if you're only gonna be gone for an hour or two.
